The National Economic and Social Rights Initiative (NESRI) worked with Teachers Unite to hold conversations  with teachers, counselors, deans, and other school staff about school safety and discipline in schools, and to publish a report on the detrimental effects of aggressive policing, punitive disciplinary measures, and negative classroom environments on school culture and safety.  The report determined that the current school culture of excessive discipline and punishment creates a dangerous environment for students and educators alike.  Educators expressed the need for preventive and constructive approaches to discipline that create positive school cultures, teach behavior skills and use conflict resolution, as well as increased counseling to support students’ social and emotional well-being.
