Teachers Unite collaborated with NYU, CUNY, educators, and students to write an essay that addresses the shrinking numbers of Black and Latinx educators in NY public schools. Despite having a student population that is 70% Black or Latinx, Black and Latinx educators only make up about 34% of public school teachers. The essay discusses the overrepresentation of white educators in schools, the historical reasons for the low rate of training, recruitment, hiring, and retention of Black and Latinx educators, and the reasons why training and hiring more Black and Latinx educators must be a priority.
